We have all been there: Shortly before the start of the gaming session (or even after!) one or even several players call in (or have to be called up) and say that they can't/won't be there because [insert honest or bullshit excuse].
What do you do?
Well, apart from having the respective player character(s) be crushed to death by a freight drone or tired dragon crushing on them mid-flight or have them tag along as some sort of brain-dead zombie under no ones control in particular, you can just grab a copy of SCHRAPNELL (available in print or as a PDF) and play one of the 9(+) "one nighter" mini-adventures here - all written to be easily inserted into "whatever" scenario.
The PCs are sitting in a bar. BOOM, Shrapnel 1. One runner doesn't show up to the team's meeting. BOOM, Shrapnel 2 (or whatever, I don't remember the exact number). You want to hassle the missing player - BOOM, have him come over for a one-to-one session in Shrapnel 3. Runners walking down the street, runners being called by a connection that will be dead if they don't help them NOW, runners just getting caught in a traffic jam or getting into a "not-so-random" police control ...
This book/PDF may not save your life, but it sure can save your night.
